Timing information: A typical EXAFS scan takes 20 minutes or so with a 3 micron or so sized beam. Mapping at higher energies can be done at around 10 points per second using rastering or even faster for concentrated samples, 1 pt per second in step by step mode. For low PPM (single figure) samples more time per point is required , typically 1-2 seconds.
Below are images of typical and specialist samples setups that have been used on I18. If any more info or requests of use are needed, please email beamline scientists. 3D piniter is also availble for more custom setups.
Common mounting options for samples to be attached to the stages and presented to the beam. There is also a 3D printer allowing for more customised setups.
This low-vibration cryostat can be used either with liquid helium or liquid nitrogen. The sample chamber is in vacuum. We recommend mounting of thin sections on sapphire discs which, once on the beamline, can be mounted on clip-on aluminium discs. There are several restrictions in the diameter of the sections that can be mounted (apprx 15 mm) and in the area that is available for x-ray imaging due to the finger that holds the aluminium disc in place. Please get in touch with the beamline for more information.
Smooth diaphram pump for smooth liquid jet. Other pumps may be available upon request such as syringe and peristaltic pumps.
Tomography collection by XRD, flourscence and transmission available with complete 360 degree rotation.
