The electron Bio-Imaging Centre (eBIC) was established at Diamond Light Source following the award of a £15.6 million grant from the Wellcome Trust, the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).
The location of eBIC enables scientists to combine their techniques with many of the other cutting-edge approaches that Diamond offers.
eBIC provides scientists with state-of-the-art experimental equipment and expertise in the field of cryo-electron microscopy, for both single particle analysis and cryo-tomography.
Currently eBIC houses five Titan Krios microscopes, a Talos Arctica, Glacios, and a Scios and Aquilos cryo-FIB/SEM.
Access to eBIC is available and currently operating under general beamline guidelines.
We are able to offer remote access, unattended automated data collection and mail-in services for all research areas (currently only available: data collection using EPU).
COVID-19 research should be requested through rapid access proposals following these instructions.
NOTE: Diamond EHC are available for support, providing 24hour coverage during the week when the beamline is on. Over the weekend EHC coverage is for 12hours only from 7am-7pm (Saturday & Sunday).
Deadline for proposal submission:
17:00hrs (BST) on Thursday 30th September 2021
Call will provide access to MicroED for a limited number of selected user proposals (Academic users only).
Initially only on-grid MicroED data collection with a Ceta-D detector and EPU-D data collection software on the Talos Arctica (200 keV) will be available.
Further details are available here (download).

We are pleased to announce a commissioning call for researchers to access the chameleon cryo-EM freezing device (application) developed commercially by SPT Labtech. This forms part of a collaboration between Diamond, the Rosalind Franklin Institute and SPT Labtech with the view to providing a platform for beta-testing of the chameleon by the wider user community that will aid further commercialisation of the system by SPT Labtech.
The chameleon uses piezo electric inkjet dispensing technology to apply nanolitre volumes of protein solution to self-wicking cryo-EM grids.
Please select the Rapid access route and the Talos instrument when you submit your proposal and also add that this is specifically for use with the chameleon.
