Preventing tooth decay
Scientists are even helping to look after our teeth. Trans-chalcone is a natural compound that prevents oral bacteria from creating a protective layer – known as a ‘biofilm’ – around their cells. Researchers have pinpointed the atomic structure of sortase, an important enzyme in biofilm formation that is blocked by the trans-chalcone. They now hope to identify similar natural compounds that could be incorporated into consumer products in order to combat tooth decay.
