Cryo-EM Sample Preparation Workshop 2019

Nov 13. till Nov 15.

Cryo-EM Sample Preparation Workshop 2019

The goal of this workshop is to teach new cryo-EM users how to prepare samples for imaging on cryo electron microscopes, primarily through hands-on tutorials, discussions and introductory talks.

Date
13/11/20192019-11-13 - 15/11/20192019-11-15
Location
Diamond Light Source

Overview

The goal of the workshop is to teach users the best practices in sample preparation for cryo-EM imaging. The workshop will be principally hands-on with students preparing vitrified samples on the latest generation of plunge-freezing devices.  They will then have the opportunity to subsequently screen these samples with the eBIC Titan Krios, Talos Arctica and Glacios electron microscopes.

This workshop will be geared toward novices.  Places have been reserved for both academic and industrial delegates.  Grant funding has been secured for academic applicants, to include the cost of the course, accommodation and meals. The cost of the course to industrial delegates will be £1750 +VAT to cover the cost of the course, lunches and dinners.

Academic applicants must show they plan to use cryo-EM as part of their research and have access to a plunge-freezing device. The workshop aims to equip participants with the necessary skill set to further develop their cryo-EM expertise at their home laboratories and eBIC. Several biological test samples will be provided allowing participants hands on experience with a variety of samples.

Topics

Introductory Lectures:
• An introduction to the basics of cryo-EM and cryo-ET
• The complete guide to sample vitrification

Hands-on sessions:
• Sample preparation for single particle cryo-EM
• Sample screening at eBIC and an introduction to data collection on Titan Krios, Glacios and Talos Arctica

Application process for academic participants

Places are strictly limited to 12 academic participants. Places will be allocated on the grounds of merit and anticipated benefit.

All academic applicants must meet the following criteria:
• You plan to use cryo-EM as part of your current research.
• You have access to a freeze plunging device.
• There are limited training opportunities in your home institution.

Before beginning the application process please prepare the following to upload/fill out on the form:
• 150 words describing your motivation for applying for the course, and how this will benefit your research and/or facility. Please also describe your current role/position and your group's plans for using EM.
• A letter of support from your PhD supervisor or lab PI if you are a PostDoc.
