BPM button design and manufacturing workshop

This workshop aims to bring together BPM button manufacturers, accelerator facilities, and vacuum vessel manufacturers in order to understand the cutting edge, both in terms of manufacturing capability, as well as design requirements.

Date
02/05/20192019-05-02 - 03/05/20192019-05-03
Location
Diamond Light Source, Oxfordshire, UK

This workshop aims to facilitate the discussion about all aspects of button pickups for beam position monitors.

In the next few years, many accelerator facilities are planning for major upgrades, which involve replacing all components of the storage ring and injector.

This workshop aims to bring together BPM button manufacturers, accelerator facilities, and vacuum vessel manufacturers in order to discuss the latest manufacturing innovation and design requirements.

Topics:

Manufacturing

Feedthrough technology (Brazing vs Glass sealing)

·       Long-term performance

Limits on mechanical tolerances (precision)

·      Welding and positional reproducibility

·       Minimum gap size between a button and lodging hole in vacuum chamber

·       Inclusion of mechanical features to compensate for distortion in the brazing process

Calibration techniques and methods

Material choice

·       Brazing limitations due to thermal expansion between button, gasket and housing

·       Housing-to-body welding feasibility

Testing and inspection

Design

Material choice

·       Button heating considerations

·       E-M simulations

·       Use of magnetic materials

Design considerations for smaller buttons, smaller pipes, or short bunch operation

Parking on Campus:

Due to a large number of building works on site, parking on the Harwell Campus is extremely limited and visitors’ parking cannot be guaranteed. We strongly recommend travelling by public transport, where possible, if you are attending an event at Diamond.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
