XAS Workshop 2013

The aim of the workshop was to teach new and nearly new users of the Diamond spectroscopy beamlines details on how to do an XAS experiment including a brief introduction to the XAS stations at Diamond, and how to process and analyse XAS data starting from a starting from scratch level (this is the main part of the course).

Diamond Light Source held a 5th XAS analysis workshop in November 2013. The course ran from lunchtime on Monday 4th November until mid-afternoon on Wednesday 6th November.

The aim of the workshop was to teach new and nearly new users of the Diamond spectroscopy beamlines:
  • details on how to do an XAS experiment including a brief introduction to the XAS stations at Diamond,
  • how to process and analyze XAS data starting from a starting from scratch level (this is the main part of the course).
The course was delivered by Diamond staff and consisted of a mixture of lectures and hands-on sessions designed to teach participants the basics of data processing and analysis using the latest version of Athena and Artemis in the package Demeter.

The hands on aspect required access to a laptop and attendees were requested to bring their own laptops, although a number of Diamond laptops were available for applicants who didn't have access to one. The programs were available in Windows and Linux form. It was possible to get them to run on a Mac but this required some expertise.

There was no fee for the course. Meals and accommodation in Ridgeway House, the on-site hostel, were provided but applicants had to pay for their transport to and from Diamond.

Applications are now closed.

There were a limited number of places available and preference was given to researchers who had or will perform XAS experiments at Diamond.
