Total Scattering Training School

A two-day training school to assist users with the careful & methodical data processing required to obtain reliable results from total scattering experiments

Date
18/03/20132013-03-18 - 19/03/20132013-03-19
Location
Diamond Light Source, Oxfordshire, UK

Diamond Light Source held a two-day "Total Scattering Training School" on the 18th & 19th March 2013.

Currently, Total Scattering experiments for Pair Distribution Function (PDF) analysis are performed on beamlines I12 & I15 at Diamond Light Source. Obtaining reliable results from total scattering experiments requires careful, methodical data processing.

The training school aimed to assist users with data analysis in the following ways:
  • Case studies by experienced users on the application of the PDF technique to different materials systems and processes
  • Training in data reduction and analysis using existing, freely available software packages (e.g. Fit2D and pdfgetX2).
  •  Encouraging contact between experienced and new users of the PDF technique.
Invited Speakers
Dr. Pete Chupas (Argonne National Laboratory, USA)
Dr. Karena Chapman (Argonne National Laboratory, USA)
Dr. Phoebe Allan (Cambridge University, UK)
Mr. Tim Lucas (Birmingham University, UK)

Target Audience
The School was primarily aimed at PhD. students and Postdoctoral Researchers who will use X-ray total scattering to obtain Pair Distribution Functions as part of their research.
The number of delegates was limited to 20 so delegates were encouraged to register early to guarantee their place.
It was free to attend the course and Diamond Light Source covered the cost of one night’s accommodation on 18th March 2013 at Cosener's House, Abingdon.  However, delegates were responsible for funding and arranging their own travel to and from Diamond.
