Diamond Light Source is pleased to announce their involvement in Artweek, the Oxfordshire visual arts festival. We will welcome visitors to Diamond to meet Artists who have been involved with Diamond’s art projects and also to meet our scientists, find out about the exciting work taking place here, and have a tour of the synchrotron itself.

Event details

Diamond continues to be involved in arts projects to demonstrate the links between science and art and involve many different areas of the community. You are invited to visit Diamond and see the works produced as well as meet the local artists involved, Anne Griffiths and Sharon Wyper. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to our latest project and put a stitch in our attempt to produce the world’s largest diffraction pattern.

You will also get an opportunity to learn more about Diamond, a particle accelerator which uses a beam of electrons travelling at almost the speed of light to create intense, powerful beams of light. We use this light to study the atomic and molecular structure of materials – everything from viral proteins to engine parts and ancient texts – to help scientists understand more about the way the world works.

This visit takes approximately 2 hours and will consist of :

  • An introductory talk about Diamond
  • A talk from one of the Artists
  • A guided tour - including a trip to see the synchrotron and our laboratories - please note that extensive walking will be involved;
  • An opportunity to talk to Diamond employees and ask them about their work and the facility;
  • A chance to view artwork done in collaboration with the local community and talk to the Artists involved as well as displays and animations of the synchrotron.

There will be four starting times for the visit, but due to the wide range of visitors that we receive the content will be tailored for different groups:

  • 9:30am and 2:00pm: Talks/tours for the general public. These sessions are now full.
  • 11:00am and 12.30pm: Talks/tours aimed at a family audience (it is suggested this may be more suitable for younger visitors, but please do note it is not suitable for children under 5)

Please note that these are recommendations; please feel free to request tickets for any of the sessions.
