Job Description

Single-particle cryo-electron microscopy is a rapidly evolving experimental method, recently highlighted with the award of the 2017 Nobel Prize in chemistry. We are looking for a high calibre scientific programmer to join our dynamic scientific software group to lead the software support of the eBIC facility. In this they will collaborate closely with colleagues to optimize integration with the Data Acquisition framework where appropriate, and to drive forward the automation of the data analysis of the terrabytes of collected data.

You will operate as part of a small team, within the scientific software group of experienced software scientists and engineers and will work with our scientists to identify and define requirements for all elements of the eBIC analysis software pipeline. It will be your responsibility to ensure that these requirements are implemented in a timely, effective and sustainable way.

The work will also involve enhancing and supporting the core features of the Scipion Software.  Scipion is an image processing framework to obtain 3D models of macromolecular complexes using Electron Microscopy, and Diamond is currently actively participating in the collaboration.
 

Qualification & Experience - Essential

  • Ability and initiative to get to the heart of the problem and take it effectively through to completion;
  • Good interpersonal, communication  and presentational skills;
  • Enjoys team work;
  • Self motivated, interested in keeping pace with software testing best practises;
  • Ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels;
  • Experience or understanding of Cryo Electron Microscopy, specifically the Single Particle method and its analysis;
  • Experience of modern programming languages such as Java, C++ and Python;
  • Requires practical experience in a professional, scientific or technical field;
  • Background in using advanced mathematics and software engineering techniques for application development.

Essential for appointment for the senior role:

  • Higher Degree in an appropriate discipline;
  • Ability to supervise or mentor small teams of more junior technical or administrative roles;
  • Experience of data management, describing data and exploiting databases for scientific work;
  • Project management experience.

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

  • Ability to supervise or mentor small teams of more junior technical or administrative roles;
  • Available to travel occasionally in UK and overseas including overnight absences;
  • Higher Degree in an appropriate discipline;
  • Experience of data management, describing data and exploiting databases for scientific work;
  • Project management experience.
