Job Description

Diamond Light Source is a new synchrotron and a leading scientific facility of its type in the world. Located on the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in South Oxfordshire, we host facilities supporting cutting edge research in all fields of science.

I13L is one of long beamlines to be built at Diamond. The beamline is designed to perform and promote high resolution imaging and tomography beyond today’s limits. This can be achieved by imaging either in direct or in reciprocal space. Two independent stations are going to be built for this purpose. Micro- and nano- structured materials will be studied with a variety of coherence and imaging related methods such as Coherent X-Ray Diffraction, Photo Correlation Spectroscopy (XPCS), full-field microscopy and tomography. The energy range of the beamline is foreseen to be 6-30keV.

Coherent imaging is a rapidly evolving field with applications to a wide area of science including: biomedicine, materials sciences, geo- or astrophysics. Examples and more details can be found on the I13L Website.

We are seeking a highly motivated support scientist to assist the users with their experiments, maintaining the beamline during operations and developing and testing of new equipment and software. Candidates will have an appropriate degree and experience in the use of scientific instrumentation and data collection. Applicants with knowledge from neighbouring fields to X-ray imaging and tomography, such as electron microscopy, astrophysics, laser physics, neutron imaging or similar nuclear methods are welcomed.

The position provides a unique opportunity of being involved in the development of new concepts in X-ray imaging.

Scientific support to designated beamlines and the user operation programme.

  • Assist in the installation, assembly, and maintenance of a range of equipment and systems on the beamline and support laboratories, including testing and commissioning;
  • Provide support to users, answering queries and ensuring they are fully briefed to use the appropriate equipment;
  • Measurement of samples sent to Diamond by users; including data reduction and basic reports;
  • Undertake problem solving and fault diagnosis of complex instrumentation eg the beamline endstation;
  • Support of in-house research activities;
  • Management of beamline peripheral laboratories where appropriate;
  • Produce documentation for external users to enable use of standard laboratory instrumentation;
  • Co-ordinate meetings, documents, reports and communications.

Qualification & Experience - Essential

  • Appropriate PhD degree or equivalent qualification or experience;
  • Experience in the use of scientific instrumentation;
  • Experience in scientific data collection;
  • Knowledge of synchrotron radiation techniques;
  • Experience in laboratory work;
  • Experience with Windows/ Linux/Unix;
  • Experience in Synchrotron Radiation;
  • Knowledge in Imaging/Tomography or neighboring areas such as electron microscopy or laser physics;
  • Good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills;
  • Ability to interact with staff and facility users at all levels;
  • Ability to work flexibly with occasional weekend and out-of hours working;
  • Ability and initiative to get to the heart of the problem and take it effectively through to completion;
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team;
  • Self motivation;
  • Must be available to travel occasionally within the UK and abroad, including overnight absences.

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

  • Experience in programming;
  • Experience in the relevant area of science, eg engineering and Environmental Science;
  • Experience at large scale facilities.
