Job Description

  • Responsible for managing all of the vacuum vessel and component procurement contracts including production and review of technical specifications, obtaining quotations, evaluation of tender returns, progress monitoring, inspection visits, review and approval of test results, project documentation and record keeping in order to ensure delivery on-time, to budget, and within specification.
  • Provide expert input to the specification and mechanical design of new vacuum vessels, systems and components, and their integration in the accelerators and beamlines, based on detailed vacuum vessel manufacturing knowledge and experience (materials, construction, welding, manufacture and testing)
  • Define relevant timescales and costs for vacuum vessel procurement based on manufacturing experience and provide this input into overall project planning.
  • Evaluate and audit vacuum vessel and component suppliers regularly, maintain supplier capability and performance records according to Diamond standards and make recommendations to ensure best supplier performance and overall value for Diamond
  • Perform or commission calculations and trials as required, and produce appropriate reports
  • Advise and assist the vacuum technical team with planning, preparation, installation, commissioning, troubleshooting and maintenance work
  • Maintain and develop Diamond’s vacuum quality standards and procedures
  • Organise, chair and attend as appropriate, relevant technical, managerial, planning and safety-related meetings
  • Lead relevant hazard and risk assessment analysis and pursue solutions to mitigate risks while complying with all Diamond Health and Safety policies
  • Keep up to date with relevant vacuum technology and industry best practice, identifying and initiating training provision to fill skills gaps
  • Propose, lead and participate in other projects as assigned
  • Produce presentations, papers and posters for relevant workshops and conferences
  • Participate in operations support including out-of-hours cover and assist in spares management

Qualification & Experience - Essential

  • Honours degree or equivalent qualification
  • Sound knowledge of vacuum vessel and vacuum system design principles
  • Experience of fabrication and manufacturing techniques for ultra-high vacuum vessels
  • Competence in the selection of materials for ultra-high vacuum
  • Knowledge of ultra-high vacuum welding technology and inspection
  • Experience in writing and interpreting technical specifications
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings
  • Basic appreciation of vacuum system instrumentation and test equipment and its use
  • Practical background in vacuum engineering and significant relevant experience
  • Good oral and written communication, presentation, influencing, negotiation and motivation skills with staff at all levels, internal customers and suppliers
  • Ability to provide ideas and creative solutions to design problems
  • Ability to lead projects completing specifications and managing time, cost and quality
  • Demonstrates self-motivation
  • Demonstrates ability and initiative to get to the heart of a problem and take it through to completion
  • Demonstrates team working skills
  • Competent in the use of computers and Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project
  • Good appreciation of project management and contract supervision principles

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

  • Experience of vacuum vessel manufacturing contract supervision, inspection and acceptance tests
  • Experience of working within a formal QA system
  • Experience of vacuum simulations and design calculations
  • Experience with cryogenic and pressure systems
  • Experience of ultra-high vacuum bakeout
  • Experience in measuring and interpreting outgassing rate data and Residual Gas Analysis data
  • Competence in AutoCAD
