Job Description

Diamond Light Source is a new synchrotron and a leading scientific facility of its type in the world. Located on the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in South Oxfordshire, we host facilities supporting cutting edge research in all fields of science. 

The position will be based in the SAXS group which looks after the beamlines I22 and B21. The experimental stations are designed to host a wide range of purpose designed specialized environment cells. The modular arrangement of the end station allows a choice between small angle scattering for large scale structures or microfocus illumination each with a wide angle scattering option for materials studies. Non Crystalline Diffraction is one of the truly synergistic interdisciplinary sectors within UK science and the wider international arena and I22/B21 serve communities in the biological, medical, physical and environmental science communities.

For recruitment at Support Scientist level:

  • Assist in installation and commissioning of new sample environments within the SAXS group;
  • Assist commissioning and development of data acquisition, visualization and analysis software as relating to sample environments;
  • Assist in development and commissioning of sample environment equipment and peripheral equipment;
  • Maintenance of the Sample Environment Development laboratory;
  • Technical support to users and in-house research activities ;
  • Produce beamline documentation for external users;
  • Administrative tasks in support of  sample environment scheduling for the SAXS Beamlines.

 

For recruitment at Senior Support Scientist level:

  • Installation and commissioning of new sample environments within the SAXS group;
  • Commissioning and development of data acquisition, visualization and analysis software as relating to sample environments;
  • Development and commissioning of sample environment equipment and peripheral equipment;
  • Maintenance and development of the Sample Environment Development laboratory;
  • Support of the research projects of the users from a diverse scientific community;
  • Contribute to scientific papers from external or in-house research;
  • Presentation of beamline developments and scientific papers at meetings and conferences;
  • Produce beamline documentation for external users;
  • Administrative tasks in support of  sample environment scheduling for the SAXS Beamlines.

Qualification & Experience - Essential

  • Appropriate first degree or equivalent qualification;
  • Experience of developing Lab Instrumentation;
  • Ability and initiative to get to the heart of the problem and take it effectively through to completion;
  • Good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills;
  • Ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels;
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team;
  • Self motivation;
  • Must be available to travel occasionally within the UK and abroad, including overnight absences.

For appointment at the senior / higher level, candidates will have relevant post-doctoral experience.

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

  • Appropriate PhD degree or equivalent qualification;
  • Experience or knowledge of synchrotron radiation;
  • Experience with LabVIEW™  or equivalent;
  • Experience with vacuum systems;
  • Experience of beamline instrumentation;
  • Experience with Windows, Linux and Unix;
  • Knowledge of beamline controls systems and  x-ray optics;
  • Experience of Non Crystalline Diffraction/SAXS-WAXS;
  • Experience of beamline sample environment design;
  • Second degree in appropriate subject;
  • Ability to manage a small team.
