Job Description

We require a Senior Building Services Engineer or Building Services Engineer to support the Head of Mechanical Facilities within the Installation and Facilities Management Group as regard the Mechanical Building Services Infrastructure and providing PSSR2000 beamline support to Science Division.

Accountabilities:

  • Liaison and supervision of external consultants, contractors, service engineers and suppliers.  This includes supervision of “design and build” contracts;
  • To keep up to date records of all QA documentation;
  • To operate the Change Control Procedures for all mechanical installations;
  • To carry out safety risk assessments and prepare method statements and/or evaluation of third party safety submissions;
  • Participation in Health and Safety and Quality Assurance procedures as appropriate to the post;
  • To undertake other related duties to meet the needs of the Installation and Facilities Management Group;
  • Flexible approach to the working conditions and environment;
  • The job may require some travel;
  • may involve 'being on call';

Senior Building Services Engineer only:

  • Technical evaluation and understanding of proposed modifications/improvements to existing systems including technical report production;
  • Specification generation and tender analysis of medium sized installation contracts (up to £1 million) including pre tender and post contract Project Management, planning, cost control, payment certification, witnessing of tests, etc. including close liaison with Procurement department;
  • Optimisation and fault diagnosis of site mechanical building services; this will be predominantly chilled/process cooling water and air conditioning systems, but will also include domestic water, MTHW/LTHW, compressed air, refrigeration systems, associated controls, along with all fixed industrial gas and liquid nitrogen installations;
  • Advise and assist scientific equipment owners/users on compliance with the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR), developing procedures including testing and change control (further training will be provided);
  • Liaison and supervision of external consultants, contractors, service engineers and suppliers.  This includes supervision of “design and build” contracts;
  • Commissioning management/supervision for small to medium sized projects to ensure compliance to relevant building services codes of practice;
  • Creation of scope of works/performance specification for small works projects. The development of building services operational systems and advising senior management of advantageous/disadvantageous for relevant proposals;

Building Services Engineer only:

  • Assisting with the problem solving and fault diagnosis on all site mechanical services, including air conditioning, chilled water, process cooling water, hot and cold water systems, MTHW/LTHW systems, compressed air, refrigeration, drainage, industrial gases (including liquid nitrogen), associated control systems, etc.;

Qualification & Experience - Essential

  • Minimum of HNC qualification in Building Services Engineering. Applicants with relevant or equivalent on-the job experience will also be considered; (Senior Building Services Engineer level only)
  • Minimum of ONC qualification in Building Services Engineering. Applicants with relevant or equivalent on-the job experience will also be considered; (Building Services Engineer level only)
  • Computer literate;
  • Good problem solving skills;
  • Ability to work on own initiative;
  • Work planning and organisational skills;
  • Good communication skills: verbal/written;
  • Able to organise and prioritise tasks to meet project timescales (Project planning);
  • Experience with HVAC systems;
  • Experience with MTHW, LTHW, Chilled/ Process Cooling Water, Compressed Air, drainage and Domestic Water systems;
  • Experience of H&S legislation;
  • Relevant work experience in similar role(s);
  • Effective team worker;
  • Flexible approach to the working conditions and environment;
  • Self-motivated.

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

  • Supervision of other staff;
  • Energy Management;
  • Commissioning Management;
  • Working knowledge of HVAC control systems;
  • Familiarity with using Quality Control Systems, Work Planning and Safe Systems of work;
  • Proven record of supervising other people;
  • Prepared to learn new skills;
  • Able to get on with people at all levels;
  • Knowledge of PSSR2000 Regulations; (Essential for appointment at the senior level)
  • Preparation of technical reports/ specifications; (Essential for appointment at the senior level)
  • Management of  mechanical installation contracts. (Essential for appointment at the senior level)
