Job Description

The UK’s national synchrotron science facility, Diamond Light Source, conducts world-class research in virtually all fields of science. Located 20 minutes from Oxford, it sits in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and offers rewarding career opportunities.

We are now looking for a Building Controls Engineer or Building Controls Technician at either level.

The aim of the role is to develop, maintain and operate the Building Management System (BMS) and standalone building control systems within the Installation and Facilities Management Group.

The key duties are as follows:

  • To undertake the day to day operation and maintenance of both the Building Management System (BMS) and standalone building control systems;
  • To witness/participate in the testing and commissioning of BMS and standalone building controls systems;
  • To assist in operational aspects of the BMS including; Graphics, Alarms – levels/types, notifications, investigation, rectification or escalation, Trend/trace monitoring regimes, including normal, out of tolerance and failure modes, Failure/Override/Parameter change reviews, Building controls network
  • Operational support and analysis of the control systems on all site mechanical & electrical services, including problem solving and fault diagnosis for the air conditioning, general and specialist ventilation, MTHW/LTHW, chilled water, refrigeration, hot and cold water systems, electrical monitoring, etc.;
  • To carry out hazard and safety risk assessments and prepare method statements;
  • Participation in Health and Safety and Quality Assurance procedures as appropriate to the post;
  • To provide input and assistance with PPM regime (Planned Preventative Maintenance), spares holding, critical and standard systems resilience, interface practices with associated mechanical and electrical systems etc.;
  • To assist in additional operational aspects of the BMS including; System performance, metering, associated energy and plant load review, 3rd party integrations using ModBus, LON, KNX, BACnet etc., Advanced Data Processing sub system, (Engineer level only) Management reporting, (Engineer level only) Identification of suitable efficiency improvements in either plant performance or improved life cycle costing (Engineer level only);
  • To undertake other related duties to meet the needs of the IFM Group.

Engineer Level Only:

  • Liaison and supervision of external consultants, contractors, service engineers and suppliers. This includes review of technical submissions, site inspections, witnessing and ‘sign off’ of new and/or extended building control systems;
  • The continued development, implementation and periodic review of suitable operational and maintenance regimes and forward maintenance plans;
  • Manage change control procedures for all building control systems/installations and keep up to date records of all QA documentation.

Technician Level Only:

  • Liaison with external consultants, contractors, service engineers and suppliers;
  • The implementation of suitable operational and maintenance regimes and forward maintenance plans;
  • To undertake basic fault finding and rectification;
  • To undertake minor modifications and upgrade works.

Qualification & Experience - Essential

  • The applicant should have served a recognised Apprenticeship in an Engineering/Electrical discipline;
  • Computer literate;
  • Good problem solving skills;
  • Ability to work on own initiative;
  • Work planning and organisational skills;
  • Good communication skills: verbal/written;
  • Commissioning/Operation of Building Management System (BMS) and stand alone building control systems; (Desirable for Technician Level)
  • Experience with HVAC systems; (Desirable for Technician Level)
  • Experience with MTHW, LTHW, Chilled Water, refrigeration systems; (Desirable for Technician Level)
  • Flexible approach to the working conditions and environment;
  • Self-motivated;
  • Prepared to learn new skills;
  • Effective team worker;
  • Able to get on with people at all levels.

Engineer Level Only:

  • Experience of supervision of other staff;
  • Project planning: - able to organise and prioritise tasks to meet project timescales;
  • Specifying and placing of BMS and stand alone installation/upgrade contracts. 

Technician Level Only:

  • Experience with Electrical/LV systems.

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

  • Minimum of ONC qualification in Building Services Engineering. Applicants with relevant or equivalent on-the job experience will also be considered;
  • Experience with  Compressed Air and Domestic Water systems;
  • Familiarity with using Quality Control Systems, Work Planning and Safe Systems of work;
  • Experience of HSE legislation;
  • Experience of CDM legislation;
  • Work experience relevant to the role.

Technician Level Only:

  • Able to organise and prioritise tasks to meet project timescales. (Project planning).
