Job Description

Accountabilities / Main Duties

To manage the achievement of finance department objectives. To sustain and improve its systems, reporting and processes.

  • Provide routine and timely financial and other reports to the required degree of accuracy for submission to the Head of Finance as a fully reviewed final version;
  • Be accountable for the integrity of the content of the company’s books of accounts. To question the validity of the underlying assumptions, and to suggest and implement any necessary changes in order to strengthen the accounting information provided;
  • Line manage the Finance team;
  • Management of the month end timetables to ensure all deadlines are met. Adapt the timetable to reflect any changing requirements and ensure that all tasks are appropriately resourced;
  • Manage the preparation and review all reporting required by BIS in line with the strict deadlines;
  • Manage the Company’s cash flow on a daily, weekly and monthly basis;
  • Be the IT system administrator for the Company Financial IT applications and to review/maintain/upgrade the financial website when appropriate;
  • Contribute to systems development and optimisation within finance;
  • Take a lead role in the continued development of the budgeting and forecasting process and to be responsible for preparation, review and consolidation of budgets and long range plans;
  • Overall responsibility for the preparation and completion of the annual statutory accounts;
  • Manage the processes for the control of fixed assets, ensure the accuracy of the entries, ensure the valuations of newly completed beamlines are correct and prepare the reconciliation to statutory accounts;
  • Prepare and reconcile payroll data supplied by HR for entry into Dream and payment to employees;
  • Manage the company’s banking and taxation arrangements;
  • Manage VAT reporting and submission of returns;
  • Contribute to the development of managers financial awareness via cost centre reviews;
  • Be familiar with the Epcost system;
  • Verify payment runs.

Qualification & Experience - Essential

  • Qualified Accountant (CIMA/ACCA);
  • Excel to pivot table and macro level;
  • Knowledge of management accounting;
  • Take responsibility for the initial preparation of management accounts;
  • Understanding and ability to prepare balance sheet reconciliations;
  • Basic foundation of work within a finance department several years experience, so that basic accounting such as accruals/prepayments etc are easily understood;
  • Knowledge of preparing and submitting VAT and Intrastat returns;
  • Knowledge of  fixed asset and depreciation reporting;
  • Experience in project and major asset accounting;
  • Involvement in production of statutory accounts;
  • Understanding of the requirement and involvement in an annual budgeting;
  • Ability to lead the month end process and provide error free reporting;
  • Knowledge of accounting rules and how to apply them to both statutory and management accounts;
  • Attention to detail, able to review documents for errors and ability to correct them;
  • Able to prioritise work and manage various  demands, from various sources, and time pressures;
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently as required;
  • Good numeracy skills;
  • Good communication skills (written and verbal).

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

  • Supervisory skills;
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment;
  • Some experience of systems development either assisting, suggesting or taking part in an improvement project;
  • Line management / supervisory experience of a small team;
  • Ability to effectively communicate a financial perspective to highly qualified (but non financial) members of staff.
