New liquid cell for soft X-ray spectroscopy

New sample environment for soft X-ray measurements from liquids

Thanks to the efforts of the I06 beamline scientists, engineers and technicians, a new sample environment has been developed to extend the range of possible measurements using I06.

The new equipment has been designed to fit into the exisiting beamline infrastructure and allows users to present liquid samples on the beamline. Soft X-rays do not travel well through air and so, until very recently, experiments were restricted to ultra high vacuum environments, incompatible with the measurement of liquid samples. Changing the chemical environment allows the investigation of samples in situ, as close to the final operating conditions as possible and allows us to monitor chemical changes as they happen.

This exciting development will provide the opportunity to perform a wide range of experiments that were not previously possible and the first experiment to make use of this new equipment will take place on Monday 19th January.
