eBIC offers a 3-Tier training program to:
Harwell provides excellent training environment with a critical mass of experts in X-ray, light and electron bio-imaging. It brings together expertise in instrumentation and technology development, high performance computing, software development and implementation of automated workflows, with a strong track record in organising workshops and symposia. eBIC will leverage the local environment, working with CCP-EM, Diamond, Instruct and other centres, to meet the training demand from a broad range of users.
Upcoming training courses and workshops will be announced on the eBIC website:
The major bottleneck for the majority of new users is a lack of knowledge in sample preparation and optimisation for cryo-EM. To address this need within the cryo-EM community, eBIC runs an annual course devised for novice users, on sample preparation.
In January 2018 the UK cryo-EM user community identified a severe shortage in personnel capable of running high-end cryo-EM microscopes. Therefore, a major initiative at eBIC through 2018 is to improve the skills of BAG users in the operation of Krios microscopes. BAG accreditation enables super-users to have autonomous use of Krios’s software during BAG time. BAG training/accreditation provides;
Focused workshops are offered on specific software packages developed both in-house (CCP-EM) and beyond. Workshops are typically 2-3 day's in duration, covering specific areas in data analysis and model refinement. They support training, dissemination and the development of new methods. Examples include;
Please Note: Users of eBIC are requested to acknowledge DLS and any of its personnel in any published material that results from their use of the Cryo-EM facilities. The following statement should always be included in any publications:
“(We acknowledge) Diamond for access and support of the Cryo-EM facilities at the UK national electron bio-imaging centre (eBIC), (proposal EM####), funded by the Wellcome Trust, MRC and BBSRC.”
Diamond Light Source is the UK's national synchrotron science facility, located at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire.
