Key Research

Expression, purification and crystallisation of membrane proteins

Prior to joining Diamond I worked at the University of Essex as a Post-doctoral researcher on a project aimed at validating the suitability of detergent-free solubilisation (using SMA; styrene maleic acid co-polymer) compared to detergent based solubilisation of membrane proteins for crystallisation and EM studies.  My PhD project was focused on α-synuclein; a soluble protein associated with Parkinson’s disease where I used atomic force microscopy and circular dichroism to show a new region of α-syn for inhibitor targeting.  I have experience of membrane protein expression, purification and crystallisation as well as basic molecular biology techniques.  At Diamond I support users in the MPL and developed new methods to work with membrane proteins.
