Darren Sherrell


Darren Sherrell is the serial crystallography beamline scientist on I24. He Recieved his BSc Hons in theoretical physics from Queen Mary in London before emigrating to the United States. He left his positon as the beamline engineer at 4.2.2 at the Advanced Light Source in Berkeley to pursue his PhD in BioPhysics at the Canadian Light Source in Saskatoon. He started work at Diamond in July 2014.

Current Research Interests

My research has particular interests in synchrotron or FEL serial crystallography (SSX, SFX) as well as anomalous dispersion, motion control and data visualization. Research includes applications of transmission and fluorescence spectra during crystallographic data collection. Expanding crystallography by separating absorption spectra profiles of elementally identical atoms from within macromolecules. Applying large scale data analysis to spectra and diffraction. I also do a lot of beamline development so that we have a more integrated and holistic approach from motion control all the way to data analysis.
