We observed magnetic domains in the presence of competing uniaxial and exchange anisotropies in Ni81Fe19 coupled with the antiferromagnet, Haematite (α-Fe2O3) using circularly polarized light.
Magnetic field and zero field annealing at temperatures below the reported Néel temperature of α-Fe2O3 led to coherence or frustration of magnetic moments depending on the direction of annealing magnetic field. Competition between the uniaxial anisotropy from interface features and the biaxial anisotropy from the epitaxial antiferromagnet is clearly demonstrated.
