Successful Proposals and Security Procedures

The User Office will contact the Principal Investigator of a successful proposal and direct them to the on-line safety training notes. The Principal Investigator needs to:

  • inform the Co-Investigators of the arrangements and requirements;
  • notify the User Office on the final list of scientists who will be at Diamond Light Source during the beamtime, to enable the User Office to prepare security cards and ensure all users have access to the computing system.

A Welcome Pack will be available at the main gate of Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) on production of photographic identification e.g. passport, driving license. The Welcome Pack will include a security card (called a proximity card) which will enable the user to get access to the site.

Health and Safety Training and Access to Site

By default the proximity card will only give users access to the site. Users must undertake a safety training test to access the experimental hall, cabins and laboratories. This test must be undertaken every 6 months to ensure users are up-to-date with safety procedures at Diamond. If users have previously undertaken safety training in the last 6 months then their proximity card will automatically be enabled to give them access to the experimental hall. If this is not the case then they will need to undertake a safety training test at Diamond. If the user has not previously used the specific beamline or laboratories at Diamond Light Source then they must also undertake a beamline induction with the associated beamline scientist before access is authorised to these areas.

Access to the Beamlines

Once all the appropriate training has been undertaken a user can access RAL site, experimental hall plus beamline cabins throughout their experimental time. If they have requested use of a laboratory the proximity card will be enabled to allow access.
