Diamond and Environmental Research

Many of the experimental stations (beamlines) at Diamond are well suited to addressing environmental questions. With powerful X-rays you can see metal corrosion as it forms, devise new materials based on earthworm poo which, it turns out, has a lot to teach us about producing stable amorphous calcium carbonate and image how captured CO2 from power stations behaves when injected into the conditions you would find several kilometres underground. Learn more about this important area of research from the scientists who bring their novel experiments to the synchrotron.

Structures of Life

Hundreds of scientists use the Diamond synchrotron every year to carry out structural biology experiments, furthering our knowledge of the body and diseases, and paving the way for new drug treatments.

Bright Light for Better Health

A wide variety of health related research takes place at Diamond and scientists here highlight how the synchrotron is helping them to bring new diagnosis techniques and better implant devices to the field of medicine. Projects include tracking down trace metals that appear in the brain in tiny concentrations (1 in a million atoms) with a goal to bring about early diagnose in neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's disease. Also research into medical devices and how we can ensure that commonly used implants such as metal-on-metal hip replacements and dental and hearing implants containing titanium are improved so that the materials they contain cause minimal problems in the body and their lifetime can be extended to reduce the need for patients to have additional operations further down the line.
