On Saturday 23rd May 2009, over 200 members of the public flocked to Diamond to take a closer look at the facility, meet its staff and view the works of art produced by its artists in residence.
The regular Inside Diamond event took on an artistic twist as part of Artweeks, a visual arts festival running throughout May across the county, and attracted interest from the local radio and newspapers.
Textile artist Anne Griffiths and painter Sharon Wyper were on hand to talk about the work they produced during their residency, and to answer visitors' questions about their art pieces and their time at Diamond.
Sharon can be seen in the picture on the left with part of her residency piece, 'The whole is made from the sum of its parts'. Themed on circularity, Sharon used cable drum ends left over from the construction of a beamline.
Anne can be seen in the picture below left with the work that she produced as a result of the residency, along with the third artist in residence, sculptor Paula Groves.
Visitors to the day were delighted with the combination of art and science and were intrigued to hear how the two areas come together in many of Diamond's outreach projects.
There have already been a number of positive comments about the day:
"I attended the open day yesterday, and like the rest of the visitors I'm sure, I enjoyed it greatly. It was good to see British science being done on this scale."
"We had a very good day that was both entertaining and informative."
A great day was had by all. Special thanks goes to all those who helped out during the day.
The next Inside Diamond will be on Saturday 3rd October 2009. Keep an eye on our website for the opening of registration or call 01235 778 548.
