Diamond Light Source is a new synchrotron and a leading scientific facility of its type in the world. Located on the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in South Oxfordshire, we host facilities supporting cutting edge research in all fields of science.
We are seeking an experienced scientist for the photoemission group. Candidates should have a strong background in research using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) for all contemporary subjects of solid state physics or surface science. You will play a leading role in the design and operation of the beamline and the high resolution ARPES and nano-ARPES spectro-microscopy instruments. Experience of synchrotron radiation research is preferred, additional experience with scanning probe techniques is desirable.
Beamline I05 (ARPES) is presently in its design phase and is scheduled to have its first user experiment in 2013. It will provide a high-resolution VUV beam (1-2 meV ultimate energy resolution) in the range of 20 – 300 eV, variable polarization and high photon flux from a long undulator. Angle-resolved photoemission from solid samples is to be performed using a state-of-the-art spectrometer from samples held in ultrahigh vacuum on a six-axis variable temperature goniometer. A second branch of the beamline will allow nano-focussing of the VUV light to less than 100 nm spatial resolution with angle resolved spectroscopy of the photoelectrons.
Working in support of the Principal Beamline Scientist in the following areas:
- To assist in the design, testing, installation and commissioning of the beamline;
- Assist in the procurement of the beamline components;
- Liaise with the suppliers of the beamline components;
- Assist in the testing, installation and commissioning of the beamline components;
- Support the operation of the beamline and interact closely with the users of this facility;
- Carry out own research in an area relevant to the beamline;
Qualifications and Experience: Essential
- PhD in physics, chemistry or materials science;
- Relevant synchrotron research experience;*
- Experience or knowledge of synchrotrons;*
- Experience of beamline instrumentation;*
- Experience of surface analysis techniques, in particular, photoelectron spectroscopy, electron microsopy and/or STM;
- Experience of ultra-high vacuum instrumentation;
- Successful scientific publication record;
- Ability and initiative to get to the heart of the problem and take it effectively through to completion;
- Good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills;
- Ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels;
- Self motivated;
- Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
*Whilst experience with synchrotrons and X-rays is preferred, alternative experience in relevant fields such as laser physics or electron microscopy are acceptable.
Qualifications and Experience: Desirable
- Second degree in appropriate subject;
- Notions about electron spectroscopy;
- Experience of software packages;
- Project management experience;
- Ability to manage a small team;
- Communication skills;
- Must be available to travel occasionally in UK and overseas including overnight absences.
