For Synchrotron Users | Assessment of Proposals

On receipt of your proposal for non-proprietary access Diamond initiates a process of assessment.  This is in three parts:

Technical Feasibility

Carried out by the relevant beamline scientist.

Initial Safety Assessment

An initial safety assessment is carried out by the Health and Safety team who will classify the experiment as one of the following:

  • Black - experiment cannot go ahead as it stands.  Health and Safety will contact the Principal Investigator
  • Red - experiment needs close supervision
  • Yellow - experiment needs monitoring at the beginning of the experiment
  • Green - no restrictions

If the proposal is successful in obtaining beamtime, the experiment will be graded again after completion of a full Experimental Risk Assessment.  This process is initiated by the User Office.

Scientific Merit

Conducted by external peer review panel.

The external peer review panel will assess all proposals approximately 6-8 weeks after the call deadline.
