Diamond Light Source and the ISIS neutron and muon facility will host a one-week general introduction to these facilities, aimed at first-year PhD students within UK research-council funded Centres of Doctoral Training.

The course will cover a basic introduction to facilities and techniques, based on the following key themes: Imaging & Tomography Small Angle Scattering & Non-crystalline Matter Surfaces, Films & Multilayers Powder & Single Crystal Diffraction Electronic & Molecular Spectroscopy Muon Studies.

The course will include numerous short introductory talks and selected tutorial/practical sessions, plus evening research seminars given by experienced facility users. It will be suitable for first-year PhD students who have an interest in all of the themes, and will require no prior experience of the techniques. (Note that ISIS and Diamond provide specialist training in specific techniques, with information available via facility web pages).

Eligibility

The course will be open to any UK-funded first-year PhD students who expect to use Diamond or ISIS facilities during their studies, irrespective of their membership of a CTD. 

The course is only open to those students who pre-register their place.

Course fees and accommodation

The cost of the course is £220.00 plus VAT (payable by invoice to the affiliated CDT). This will include lunches and evening meals.

Delegates will have to arrange and pay for their own accommodation and make their own transport arrangements. We have reserved a number of rooms at local accommodation venues for students to book. Details of which are below:
