Date: Fri. 8th November 2013
Venue: G53 & 54, Diamond House, Diamond Light Source
The high resolution powder diffraction beamline I11 is currently undergoing a major upgrade; a new hutch (EH2) is being constructed downstream of the existing experimental hutch (EH1) and will be used for Long Duration Experiments (LDE). This new facility will be the first of its kind and will open up new research opportunities. Samples will remain in the hutch where they can be monitored and maintained at, or cycled through, various non-ambient conditions for extended periods of time, ranging from several weeks to a year or more. The large hutch will accommodate multiple experiments running in parallel with weekly X-ray data collection to allow long term structural changes to be detected. Please visit our website for more technical information,

The first commissioning LDE are expected to start in autumn 2014. In order to allow sufficient time to prepare for these experiments, we have organised this workshop to update the community on progress and to stimulate discussion regarding the type of experiments that could be carried out. The timing of the workshop is designed to anticipate the first call for proposals in Nov/Dec 2013. Due to the long-term nature of these experiments the workshop will, in the first instance, be of interest to project leaders and other established researchers interested in developing long duration programmes.
The following have been identified as areas that will benefit from the LDE facility:
· Energy e.g. In-situ cycling of batteries and fuel cells under “real-life” conditions.
· Catalysis e.g. Reactions monitored over multiple cycles.
· Environmental e.g. Mineral formation, processing and environmental interaction
· Radiation exposure e.g. Effects on materials of exposure to radiation.
· Metallurgy and materials e.g. Long term phase stability and thermomechanical response.
· Pharmaceuticals e.g. Long term effects on drugs stored in warm and/or humid environments.
· Gas Storage e.g. Crystal structure stability associated with gas-loaded materials.
· Corrosion e.g. Effects of corrosive atmospheres, conservation
Although these will form the basis for Breakout Group discussions, there are likely to be a number of other research areas which could benefit from the LDE facility and further input is encouraged. This workshop will enable researchers to discuss their ideas with the committee and other researchers.
Registration
There is no registration fee for this workshop which includes refreshments and lunch, but places are limited so early registration is recommended.
Registration is now closed.
The deadline for registration is 30th Sep 2013 or earlier if it oversubscribed.
We look forward to seeing you at the workshop.
