Workshops

Energy and storage materials
A workshop highlighting synchrotron radiation research into energy and storage materials. Leading scientists in these fields of research were invited to present the latest results and developments in hydrogen and gas storage systems, renewable energy and others.
Organisers: Chiu Tang and Fred Mosselmans

3rd MX User Workshop
The 3rd MX User Meeting, with updates on new developments in facilities, data processing and techniques. The meeting featured updates from the scattering beamline on complementary techniques available to structural biologists.
Organiser: Thomas Sorensen

Functional Materials
The intriguing properties of many new functional materials such as multiferroics, topological insulators, graphene and molecular magnets were covered in this workshop. Particular emphasis was placed on polarised soft x-ray and ultraviolet studies. In addition, functional properties such as phase separation and dynamics were addressed.

Cell microbiology: from cancer research to stem cells
The focus of this session was to get an overview of the latest experimental contributions made to MicroBiology and Medical Research by Synchrotron based microanalysis and imaging techniques.
Research examples were given by leading scientists to show that X-rays and InfraRed radiation can act as complementary probes to provide biochemical and biophysical information from tissues structures to single cells, in terms of local elemental composition and spatial molecular distribution.
Organiser: Gianfelice Cinque

Engineering & Imaging
Two and three-dimensional synchrotron based imaging is developing into an important tool for material and engineering scientists to understand structure and processing of novel materials and environments. Leading researchers presented their latest findings obtained through time-resolved radiography and tomography.

Keynote speaker

We were delighted to welcome Professor Sir Chris Llewellyn Smith, Director of Energy Research, Oxford University, President of the Council of SESAME (Synchrotron light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East), and a Visiting Professor in the Oxford Physics Department to give the keynote address at the meeting.

Facility Update

The facility update on 5th September included the following. The Update by Gerd Materlik and the Update on programmatic review by Neil Pratt are available for download below:

11:00 - 11:10 Welcome - Bill Clegg, Chair of the Diamond User Committee
11:10 - 11:25 Update - Gerd Materlik, CEO, Diamond Light Source
11:25 - 11:35 Featured talk - Dr Sihai Yang, winner of the 2011 Young Investigator of the Year Award
11:35 - 11:40 Update on the programmatic review - Neil Pratt, STFC

Student Day - 4th September

We ran an event for students and early stage researchers on the 4th September. The event was aimed as an introduction to the users meeting, and gave students the chance to meet Diamond science staff and other researchers at a similar stage.
