Beamlines | Troubleshooting

1 - Total loss of flux at sample
Consequences:
A.        No readout in the beamstop diode
B.        Black image on the detector

Causes:
A.       Ring current at zero
Await Ring Refill, Check Optics Hutch for Shutter open on beam return

B.         Optic shutter closed
·         It may happen that the optic shutter remains closed after a refill. Call the control room (8899). The operators can open the shutter for you.
·         A Machine protection System (MPS) will also closed the optic shutter if something went wrong in the optic hutch. Open the “interlock” window and check where the fault is.
o   Vacuum?
If the vacuum is OK, open the valves and reopen the optic shutter
o   Water flow?
Fill the water bath
o   Hutch door open?
Do the search of the optic hutch and reopen the optic shutter
o   Cryo trip?
Reset interlock and reopen the optic shutter

C.         Experiment shutter closed
·         There is a “green” light on the search panel.
o   Do a search of the experimental hutch
·          “BEAM ON” is not lighted on the search display panel
o   Do a search of the experimental hutch
·         Check the vacuum after the experiment shutter

D.        Fast shutter closed
See document “Set up the fast shutter on I22.doc”

E.         Sample alignment misaligned
Scan the precision stage (pxyx/pxyy) or the table (basex/basey)

F.         Detector issues
·         Protective cover on the detector.
·         Voltages loss
o   Follow the instructions on the document located on the power supply
·          No gas left in the detector
o   Call the EHC for replacement if the gas bottles are empty (It will take about 6 hours to recover)
o   Check gas is circulating through the detector (mass flow controller)

2 - Reduced flux at sample
Consequences:
A.        Drop on the readout in the beamstop diode
B.        Noisy image on the detector

Causes:
A.      Attenuators in place
Check D3 and D5 for attenuation

B.      Detector issues
·         Voltages wrong
o   Follow the instructions in the manual
·          Gas mix wrong
o   Set gas mix to correct program in CC2 High Xe content for >12keV
·         No gas left in the detector
o   Call the EHC for replacement if the gas bottles are empty (It will take about 6 hours to recover)
o   Check gas is circulating through the detector (mass flow controller)

C.         Air in the SAXS camera
·         SAXS tube not pumped
o   Switch the pump on (Wait for 10-30minutes depending on the camera length)
·         SAXS windows camera blows
o   Cut Window can be found in Lab 13

D.        Sample alignment misaligned
Scan the precision stage (pxyx/pxyy) or the table (basex/basey)
