Beamlines | I10 - High field magnet end station

System description

The high field magnet system is an experimental station providing very high magnetic field and low temperature environment optimized for studies of magnetism using  x-ray dichroism.

The magnetic field is directed along the direction of the x-ray beam. The system can be fitted with one of two sample helium cryostats (inserts). Each cryostat can vary the sample temperature within a specific temperature range.

Main system specifications are summarized in the following table:

Maximal magnetic flux density ± 14 T
4He insert temperature range 2 - 420 K
3He insert temperature range 0.5 - 350 K
Field polarity reversal time < 1 hour
Sample rotation around the vertical axis ± 90°

The sample will be placed in ultra high vacuum.

Detection

Dichroism effect in absorption will be detected by total electron yield and fluorescence yield.

The total electron yield is more surface sensitive. This is achieved by grounding the electrically isolated sample through a sensitive current amplifier.

The fluorescence yield gives more sensitivity to the bulk of the sample. This is achieved with a photodiode placed close to the sample.
