Diffractometer

  • EH1 diffractometer2+3 circle diffractometer
  • Hexapod or Eulerian cradle (hexapod load capacity up to 30kg vertical mounting, 50kg horizontal mounting)
  • Horizontal or vertical scattering geometry

Detectors

  • Pilatus 100K
  • SOLO (based on monolithic active pixel sensor (MAPS) technology for fast experimental data collection)
  • Pilatus 2M large area detector
  • Point detectors, including a APD and Cyberstar scintillation detector

Detector positioning system

  • Detector positioning systemAdditional mounting sytem for Pilatus 2M area detector
  • Sample-detector distance variable from 1.5-3 metres
  • The detector can also move both horizontally and vertically covering an angular range from the sample of up to ~20 degrees depending on distance from sample

Deflector

  •  New development presently being commissioned
  • Allows reflectivity from liquid surfaces without the need to move the sample (Qz up to >1 Å-1)
  • Will ultimately be energy tunable between ~8 and 30keV
  • Can easily combine with GISAXS or GIXD for certain energies
  • Can approach the interface from above or below

Below are some schematic diagrams that help to explain the geometry of this system. Just like in a standard double-crystal-monochromator, we use two different crystals, Si(111) and Si(220), to achieve an overall beam deflection. Rotation of this pair of crystals around the incident beam then allows the angle of incidence at the sample position to be varied.

Sample environments

A wide range of sample environments will become available in the coming year.

Presently available to users:

  • Ultrahigh vacuum baby chamber
  • Controlled atmosphere environments (different sizes available with heaters and UV lamp if required)
  • Potensiostat (contact the beamline team for details)
  • Various Liquid and Langmuir Troughs and active anti-vibration system (contact the beamline team for details)

Planned environments:

  • Gas handling system
  • Humidity control
  • Electrochemical
  • A variety of solid-liquid cells
  • Closed cycle cryostat (10 - 800 K)

The flexiblity of the diffractometer also means that we are able to mount a wide range of user supplied sample environments. Details of space constraints etc. are available on request.

For details of when particular environments will be ready for use, please see the equipment availability page.
