Beamlines | B18 - Support Facilities

In addition to the beamline experimental stations, Diamond provides an extensive range of support facilities for users. Preparation laboratories, office space and meeting rooms are housed in the synchrotron building itself, and a Guesthouse for overnight accommodation is just a short walk away. A restaurant is available providing breakfast, lunch and evening meals, including weekends.

Peripheral laboratory space dedicated to the I18 beamline allow visiting researchers to prepare for the experiments before their beamtime has started. Facilities available to I18 users include wet and dry laboratories equipped with:

  • Oxygen free dry (solvent tolerant) glove box with integrated microscope
  • Fume hoods
  • Class II biological safety cabinet
  • Centrifuge
  • Microbiological incubator (-10 – 100 °C)
  • Benchtop autoclave
  • Motorised microtome (0.5 – 50 μm slices)
  • Fridge-freezer (-20 °C)
  • Liquid nitrogen freezer (-196 °C)
  • Oven (250 °C max.)
  • Balances with 1 mg accuracy
  • pH/ion/dO2 meters
  • Stirrer hotplates
  • Vacuum dessicator
  • Standard glassware and instruments

Additional water-tolerant and solvent-free glove boxes will be available on beamline I22 and in the general chemistry lab.

An analysis laboratory equipped with:

  • Fully-automated optical Zeiss microscope, Nikon polarised microscope 
  • Nicolet 5700 FTIR spectrometer with Continuum FTIR microscope
  • Lambda 650S UV/Vis spectrophotometer
  • Fischer XDAL- XRF spectrometer for preliminary analysis
  • Balance with 0.1mg accuracy
  • Renishaw micro-Raman spectrometer

Consumables including H2 and N2 gases, weighing boats, kapton tape and disposable gloves/hats/coats/shoes will be provided.

Other gases, solvents and common acids will be available upon request, please contact a member of the beamline team. Also available is a cleanroom with laminar flow hoods for class 100.
