About Diamond | What are the benefits to science and the local community?
How does Diamond benefit the scientific community?
Diamond offers scientists access to experiments which would be impossible to carry out in their own labs, and to technology which is incredibly specialised. Access to Diamond is free at the point of access for scientists funded by the UK Research Councils or the Wellcome Trust, providing results are published and freely accessible by the academic community, and is given on scientific merit, controlled by a peer review panel.
What are the economic benefits of Diamond?
Diamond has both long term and short term benefits to the economy – in providing jobs and stimulating the local economy in the short term, and in supporting scientific excellence which will impact on industries including engineering to pharmaceuticals in the long term. Synchrotron light can help scientists discover the structures of proteins and molecules much faster than they could in their labs, making product development more efficient.
Does Diamond generate jobs for the local community?
Yes. Many of Diamond’s 350 staff are from the local area. We have also used many local suppliers during the construction of Diamond and have developed strong links with the local business community.
Are there benefits for industry/local scientific companies?
Diamond has worked with many local and national suppliers, both in the construction of Diamond and in its operational phase, and we have encouraged strong interactions with local companies. We also have several industrial users which are based nearby. Having Diamond on the doorstep helps increase their efficiency and gives them access to a facility which can help bring new and exciting products to the market.
