Professor Jim Naismith, Centre for Biomolecular Sciences, The University of St Andrews
Jim Naismith, born in 1968 in Hamilton Scotland, graduated as Chemist from the University of Edinburgh in 1989. As a Carnegie Scholar he earned a PhD from Manchester in 1992 under the supervision of Bill Hunter, Dave Garner and John Helliwell. In Manchester he first performed experiments, both diffraction and spectroscopic, at the UK's original synchrotron the SRS. As a NATO fellow he worked for two years in the lab of Stephen Sprang in UT Southwestern Dallas. On Jan 1 1993 he was appointed a lecturer at St Andrews University, where he has remained. His work attempts to combine chemical, structural and molecular biology. He is the only person to be awarded both the Corday Morgan of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Colworth Medal of the Biochemical Society for outstanding research by a scientist under 38 years. His work was also recognized by the Carbohydrate Medal and by Leverhulme Prize. He has published 90 papers, and is a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Edinburgh and Royal Society of Chemistry.
