Andy Akerman, Director of Finance and Corporate Services
Andy Akerman studied Economics and Statistics at York University, with the support of a scholarship from GKN Rolled Bright and Steel Ltd, and trained as a Chartered Accountant with Deloitte and Co. He subsequently returned to GKN and his career spanned a number of different industries including, steel, electronics, construction, control systems and the deep repair and maintenance of military aircraft. His last appointment before joining Diamond Light Source was as Finance Director of the Defence Aviation Repair Agency, a Trading Fund within the Ministry of Defence. His experience, gained from a wide range of industries, corporate cultures and functional responsibilities has equipped him well for the unique challenges that Diamond faces.
With over 30 years experience in financial management, almost 20 of those at director level, he joined Diamond as Director of Finance and Corporate Services in 2009. In addition to contributing to the strategic development and day to day management of the company and advising and supporting the CEO, Executive Directors and Board, his role involves managing the Finance, Human Resources, business IT, Procurement and Commercial teams Effective leadership in these areas enables the science and technical divisions to concentrate on what they do best – providing a world class machine that delivers a stable platform for ground-breaking scientific discoveries.
