In 2016 R03 was created by a Diamond summer student. R03 is a portable Diamond beamline which demonstrates the principles of how beamlines at Diamond work. It is powered by a Raspberry Pi, on which the GDA, Diamonds Generic Data Acquisition System is running. This allows the beamline to conduct any scientific scans as a normal beamline at diamond can. It is connected to an Arduino which allows the movement of motors and other hardware devices. With the addition of a Raspberry Pi Camera, the beamline is capable of conducting a tomography style scan.
This project would like to take this prototype one step further, digitally connecting it to the outside world but also making it portable for outreach activities. Twitter has been proven as an effective way of Diamond connecting with the outside world (see https://twitter.com/@DLSProjectMLive) and it has been demonstrated by others to be suitable for remote hardware control (such as running a Sour-dough incubator) The concept is that a user could request an experiment to be conducted by messaging the beamlines twitter account, the experiment would be conducted, the results processed and sent back to the originator as a series of tweets showing progress and the final reconstructed object.
