Diamond Light Source is one of the most advanced scientific facilities in the world. It houses the UK’s synchrotron light source, a giant microscope that can produce beams of light 10 billion times brighter than the sun, to probe the structure and composition of matter. From viruses and vaccines, to alternative energy solutions and nanotechnology, it underpins research and innovation for more than 8000 scientists. Located 20 minutes from Oxford, it sits in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and offers rewarding career opportunities.
The development of the Diamond facility is key to maintaining its world-class, and in many areas, world-leading standing. One such development that is underway is to further increase the brightness of its X-ray sources in order to improve and extend Diamond’s scientific output. This is an exciting opportunity for a bright and motivated physicist to help us in this important task, joining the Insertion Device Group as a Graduate Physicist, Physicist or Senior Physicist depending on the level of your skills and experience. You will work on the development of innovative electromagnetic and permanent magnet devices that operate at the core of the Diamond facility, generating its high quality X-ray beams, involving a mixture of analytical, simulation and practical work in a highly international context.
The key duties are as follows:
You will contribute to the physics aspects of the design, construction, commissioning and operation of permanent and electromagnetic (including superconducting) insertion device systems for Diamond through a variety of tasks (at a level commensurate with grade of the post):
- contributing to the determination of parameters for new devices by calculating and optimising the expected synchrotron radiation emission;
- carrying out computer modelling to optimise magnetic designs;
- carrying out magnetic measurements, data analysis, and magnetic field optimisation procedures for actual devices;
- assisting with the commissioning and future operation of new devices in the Diamond storage ring;
- calculating the final performance of the devices and comparing with the results of direct measurements of the emitted synchrotron radiation;
Qualification & Experience:
For the Graduate role you will need a good degree in physics or a related subject, with good mathematical and computer skills, and eagerness to learn. For the Physicist role you will in addition have a PhD and/or relevant post-Degree experience in some related aspects of the job. For the Senior Physicist role you will already have considerable experience and proven capabilities in the field of insertion device systems.
