Job Description

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility providing X-rays approximately 30 to 35 weeks per year for UK and international user experiments. Located on the Harwell Science & Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire a 10 minute drive south of Didcot in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Diamond Light Source conducts world-class research in virtually all fields of science and offers rewarding career opportunities covering both technical and scientific disciplines.
 
We are seeking to recruit a research assistant to work within the Oxford Protein Production Facility (OPPF) group on structural biology projects especially focussed on protein complexes and membrane proteins in collaboration with the membrane protein laboratory at Diamond. The protein production platform in the OPPF combines high throughput expression screening in insect and mammalian cells with multi-litre scale-up and down stream processing. The post holder will be responsible for providing dedicated support for mammalian/insect cell expression technology and will be based in the Research Complex at Harwell. The post holder will also contribute to day-to-day management of the tissue culture infrastructure, assist with general laboratory duties and provide training and support to in-house and external users.

Duties / Responsibilities

To provide technical expertise in cell culture of insect and mammalian cells. Contribute to the development of cell culture facilities across Diamond and the Research Complex. Provide training and  support for local and remote/Diamond facility users.

Working within the OPPF-UK and closely with Diamond to carry out the following duties:

  • To provide expertise in cell culture of insect and mammalian cells;
  • To carry out protein production in insect and mammalian cells at multi litre scale;
  • To provide training and supervision of both local and external Diamond users;
  • To contribute to the development of cell culture facilities across the Research Complex and Diamond;
  • Contribute to maintenance of general health and safety procedures in the laboratory;
  • Contribute to in house research programme.

Qualification & Experience - Essential

  • Degree in Biology or related field;
  • Ability to interact effectively and diplomatically with staff and facility users at all levels;
  • Proven organisational skills with good attention to detail;
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Willingness to help and the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team;
  • Flexible approach to work;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Experience in cell culture of insect and mammalian cells;
  • Good IT skills, including MS Office Suite;
  • Experience in protein production.

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

  • Ability to carry out research work independently and drive ideas/developments;
  • Experience in managing laboratory general infrastructure and processes;
  • Experience in working in a structural biology laboratory;
  • Experience in preparing risk assessment for biological safety and general laboratory practices.
