Job Description

Diamond Light Source is a new synchrotron and a leading scientific facility of its type in the world. Located on the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in South Oxfordshire, we host facilities supporting cutting edge research in all fields of science.

The position which is for 1 year maternity cover, will work with the Industrial Liaison Team and B18 team to support Industrial and general users, develop and commission equipments and undertake their own research. We wish to recruit a scientist with experience and strong research interest in XAS. It is essential to have experience of XAS data collection from a synchrotron and a comprehensive knowledge of the data analysis.

B18 is a general purpose bending magnet XAS (XANES, EXAFS) beamline (2.1 - 35 keV), being part of an integrated project devoted to XAS which includes I18, a Microfocus beamline based on an undulator source (2-20 keV), and I20, a high flux versatile multi-pole wiggler, (4-35 keV). The Core-XAS beamline naturally complements the specialized activities undertaken at the other XAS beamlines, allowing experiments with more general and less demanding specifications, preliminary studies, and open to the access of one-time and new users.

Core XAS is used for an extensive range of studies that underpins research programmes across a wide range of applications, including local structure and electronic state, and the study of materials; including catalysts, batteries, fuel-cells, fluids, crystalline and non-crystalline (amorphous phases & colloids) solids, surfaces, environmental and biomaterials.

We require an Industrial Liaison Scientist to provide scientific support to the beamline, working with the Industrial Liaison and B18 teams in the following areas:

·         Local contact support to users by setting up and providing advice and guidance on the best approach to experiments, data analysis and research techniques;

·         Installation, assembly, and maintenance of a range of equipment and systems on the beamline and support laboratories, including testing and commissioning;

·         Carry out own research in an area relevant to the beamline and disseminate through publications and presentations;

·         Assist in the development of a new item of equipment or system on the beamline, including testing and commissioning.

Qualification & Experience - Essential

  • Appropriate first degree or equivalent qualification;
  • Second degree in appropriate subject;
  • Experience of X-ray absorption spectroscopy;
  • Experience of data collection at a synchrotron;
  • Experience of XAS analysis package(s);
  • Relevant XAS research experience;
  • Ability and initiative to get to the heart of the problem and take it effectively through to completion;
  • Good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills;
  • Ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels;
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team;
  • Ability to work flexibly with occasional weekend and out-of hours working;
  • Self motivation;
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team;
  • Available to travel occasionally in UK and overseas including overnight absences.

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

·         Experience of beamline instrumentation;

·         Experience of in situ catalysis research;

·         Experience with Windows/Linux;

·         Successful scientific publication record.
