Job Description

B24 is the soft X-ray tomography beamline at Diamond offering both high resolution tomography and super resolution fluorescence microscopy facilities for biological samples. The beamline is at the later commissioning stages with an active user community already in place. The methods developed onsite promise to provide unique insights into the ultrastructure of cells under a variety of near physiological scenarios,

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral research associate to carry out innovative research in the field of correlative imaging. The main focus of the research will be the elucidation of the effects of bacterial challenge (in specific Staphylococcus aureus) to the distribution of immunity factors and the cellular ultrastructure of primary macrophages. Macrophages are the first line of host defense within the context of innate immunity, an evolutionary conserved germ-line coded host defense. This project seeks to deliver a spatial understanding of the interactions between Drosophila primary macrophages and S. aureus with emphasis on tracking the infection following both microbe molecules and host receptors and connect time, bacterial load and macrophage fate.

The project is a collaboration between Dr Maria Harkiolaki at beamline B24 (http://www.diamond.ac.uk/Beamlines/Imaging/B24.html) and Professor Petros Ligoxygakis at the University of Oxford
(https://www.bioch.ox.ac.uk/research/ligoxygakis).

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary group of dedicated scientists working on the development of imaging techniques with special emphasis on X-ray tomography and its correlative potential when applied in conjunction with other cutting edge methods such as super resolution fluorescence and electron microscopy. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of the beamline and help define the future direction of the methods applied.

The post holder should have a PhD degree in biology/biochemistry or applied physics and have a demonstrated record of accomplishment in conducting high quality original research. Knowledge of X-ray fluorescence or electron microscopy is desirable.
