Job Description

Beamline I05-ARPES consists of two branches. HR-ARPES is a high resolution, low temperature instrument of angle-resolved photoemission studies of cleaved single crystal samples as well as thin film samples prepared in the attached surface science facilities. Nano-ARPES is a new scanning photoemission spectro-microscope with spot size well below 1 μm.  The photon energy range is 18 – 240 eV with variable polarization and high photon flux from a 5m long undulator.

We are seeking a highly motivated scientist to perform experiments and analysis of the data on the beamline or similar facilities within the science program of the beamline team as well as external collaborations. The successful applicant is expected to have experience in electron spectroscopy experiments or other relevant high-resolution probes of the electronic structure of solids with a focus on strongly correlated electron systems.

The PDRA will be responsible for running a strong experimental research program under the supervision of the Principal Beamline Scientist. Experiments can be done within the beamline team or in collaboration with external partners from sample preparation through to publication in high impact journals.

Working with the ARPES beamline team in the following areas:

  • Perform internationally competitive experiments on either the HR-ARPES end station or the new nano-ARPES instrument using synchrotron radiation from beamline I05;
  • Help with maintenance and development of surface science sample preparation facilities on HR-ARPES;
  • Perform state-of-the art analysis of ARPES data using both existing as well as newly developed tools;
  • Presentation of the in-house research, beamline developments and scientific papers at meetings, conferences and in peer-reviewed journals.

Qualification & Experience - Essential

  • Appropriate first degree;
  • PhD;
  • Experience or knowledge high resolution ARPES from single-crystal solids;
  • Experience of data analysis software using tools that are relevant for ARPES data analysis;
  • Experience or knowledge of relevant research topics in solid state physics or surface science;
  • Ability and initiative to get to the heart of the problem and take it effectively through to completion;
  • Good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills;
  • Good organisational and planning skills;
  • Ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels;
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team;
  • Self motivation;
  • Must be available to travel occasionally within the UK and abroad, including overnight absences.

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

  • Experience of ultrahigh vacuum methods for surface science studies using electron spectroscopy;
  • Experience of synchrotrons / x-ray beamlines;
  • Experience with Windows/Linux/Unix.

Further Information

  • Must be available to travel occasionally within the UK and abroad, including overnight absences.
