Job Description

There is a now a vacancy for a Senior or PLC Technician in the Equipment Protection Systems team within the Control Systems Group. The team delivers the entire machine protection systems and other PLC based technical solutions across the three accelerators and all beamlines in Diamond. In doing so, the team undertakes complete life cycle support from working with customer groups to bring out requirements, designing PLC solutions, developing the software, commissioning and providing operational support.
 
The position will have following responsibilities:
  • Provide operational support on installed Beamline Equipment Protection Systems and Accelerator Machine Protection systems;
  • Maintenance records of subsystem module & software revision history;
  • Supervision of contractors and installation work;
  • Interfacing with internal customer including Engineers and Scientists;
  • Managing work priorities of personal work;
  • Reporting on progress on period basis;
  • During the initial installation of Diamond, duties will also include supporting the installation of the control system;
  • Managing outside manufacture of PLC and other subassemblies;
  • Commissioning and fault finding of interlocks and subsystems based on PLC technology;
  • Design and developing PLC software in conjunction with the Senior PLC Engineer; (Senior level only)
  • Assist in the testing of PLC software in conjunction with the PLC Engineer; (Technician level only)

Qualification & Experience - Essential

  • HNC/HND with recognised apprenticeship or equivalent qualification in electronic engineering;
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written;
  • Ability to solve technical problems, evaluating alternative courses of action and innovating where necessary;
  • Demonstrate good organisational skills;
  • Demonstrate a willingness to take responsibility and ownership of problems; 
  • Demonstrate ability to work alone and as part of a team;
  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively without direct supervision and organise their own time appropriately;
  • Relevant experience in commissioning and fault finding of interlocks and subsystems;
  • Experience in supervision of contractors and installation work;
  • Be willing to work occasional shifts during commissioning and later operations;
  • Be prepared to undertake further training;
  • Ability to work in restricted or confined spaces;
  • Experience in developing PLC software  and the operation of PLCs; (Senior level only)
  • Experience in the operation of PLCs; (Senior level only)
  • ONC/OND with recognised apprenticeship or equivalent qualification in electronic engineering; (Essential for Technician level only)
  • Knowledge of communication protocols, such as RS232/422/485 and experience in fault finding; (Desirable for Technician level)
  • Experience in managing outside contracts. (Desirable for Technician level)

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

  • Experience with electronic digital and analogue systems;
  • Electrical design experience using AutoCAD.
