Job Description

Diamond Light Source is a world class science institute providing X-Ray beams of exceptional brightness for use by scientists to probe the atomic building blocks of physical and biological matter. The Engineering Group plays a key role in the design and construction of beamlines that transport the light from the electron accelerator to the scientific sample. Beamlines comprise optical elements and sample environments that employ sub-micron, multi-axis, precision motion systems operating in Ultra High Vacuum environments and often at cryogenic temperatures.
 
We are seeking a highly motivated Electrical Design Engineer or Designer to provide effective support for our technical projects. You will be required to interact closely with scientific staff, providing creative and innovative solutions and professional input into all phases of the projects.
 
With an honours degree/HNC or equivalent in a relevant discipline and suitable experience, your excellent technical skills will be complemented by your teamwork and ability to communicate effectively at all levels. The role involves designing of Rack Based control panels, Layout Drawings, P& ID, Block Diagrams, Hook Ups and experience in use of AUTOCAD is an essential requirement.

We are now seeking to appoint at either level:
 
Electrical Designer:
 
The aim of this role is to provide electrical design drafting support to Diamond projects.
 
Key responsibilities include:
  • Develop knowledge and understanding in technologies such as; programmable logic controllers, Sensors, motors, actuators and encoders;
  • Use of Computer Aided Design software package AutoCAD;
  • Assist in procurement of equipment through commercial suppliers;
  • Contribute to hazard analysis and risk assessment exercises;
  • Maintain and update engineering drawings and documentation on projects;
  • Work within DLS procedures and contribute to their development;
  • Produce electrical detailed design drawings for technical systems such as;
  1. Motion control for optical systems
  2. Vacuum control systems for vessels & beam tubes
  3. Safety interlock systems for personnel protection
  4. Electrical installations for buildings and experimental areas including power distribution, lighting, telecoms, HVAC, etc.
Electrical Design Engineer:
 
The aim of this role is to provide electrical engineering design support to the technical systems of the Diamond facility.
 
Key responsibilities include:
  • Work closely with internal & external scientific and engineering staff to produce electrical designs for projects including, motion control for optical systems, vacuum control systems for vessels & beam tubes, safety interlock systems for personnel protection and electrical installations for buildings and experimental areas including power distribution, lighting, telecoms, HVAC, etc.;
  • Develop and apply expertise in technologies such as Programmable logic controllers, Sensors, actuators and encoders;
  • Use of Computer Aided Design software package AutoCAD;
  • Procurement of equipment through commercial suppliers;
  • Supervision of internal and contract design staff and control of quality;
  • Contribute to hazard analysis and risk assessment exercises;
  • Maintain and update engineering drawings and documentation on projects;
  • Work within DLS procedures and contribute to their development.

Qualification & Experience - Essential

Electrical Designer:

  • HND or equivalent  in relevant discipline;
  • Good working knowledge of AutoCAD system;
  • Ability to work reliably and minimum of supervision;
  • Demonstrate production of good quality electrical detail drawings with reference to specifications;
  • Background in electrical engineering;
  • Team player and good communicator.

Electrical Design Engineer:

  • HND or equivalent  in relevant discipline;
  • Ability to provide ideas and creative solutions to design problems;
  • Good working knowledge of a CAD system with significant experience;
  • Demonstrate self-motivation;
  • Demonstrate ability and initiative to get to the heart of a problem and take it efficiently through to completion;
  • Demonstrate good oral and written communication skills with peers, subordinates, customers and suppliers;
  • Good background in electrical engineering;
  • Excellent working knowledge of engineering drawings and working to specifications for controls and electrical designs;
  • Experience of working in a team, discussing work with other team members and presenting ideas and solutions to engineers or customers;
  • Background in the use of computers and data handling including Microsoft office systems, Word, excel, power point, publisher, Microsoft project and MathCad;
  • Must be available to travel on work related business with some overnight stays occasionally;
  • Light manual tasks may be involved during commissioning.

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

Electrical Designer:

  • Degree or equivalent qualification;
  • Engineering Council registration and membership of relevant professional body;
  • Technical Apprenticeship;
  • Understanding of controls and electrical designs;
  • Experienced in the use of computers and MS Office including Word, and excel;
  • Experience of working within a QA system;
  • Experience of manufacture, assembly, testing and commissioning of systems;
  • Competence in at least one of the following; Motion control, safety systems, building services, PLCs, instrumentation;
  • Occasional travel on work related business.

Electrical Design Engineer:

  • Degree or equivalent in relevant discipline;
  • Engineering Council registration and membership of relevant professional body;
  • Technical Apprenticeship;
  • Driving Licence;
  • Demonstrate ability to lead, motivate and manage internal and contract staff;
  • Good working knowledge of AutoCAD;
  • Some appreciation of electrical calculations packages;
  • Experience of supervising design office work; 
  • Experience of working within a QA system;
  • Good appreciation of project management;
  • Experience of overseeing manufacture, assembly, testing and commissioning of systems;
  • Knowledge of developments in the field;
  • Competence in two or more of the following; Motion control, safety interlock systems, electrical installations for buildings and experimental equipment including power distribution, lighting, telecoms, HVAC, etc. PLCs, sensors, actuators, encoders, vacuum technology.
