Job Description

Diamond Light Source is a world class science institute providing X-Ray beams of exceptional brightness for use by scientists to probe the atomic building blocks of physical and biological matter. The Engineering Group plays a key role in the design and construction of beamlines that transport the light from the electron accelerator to the scientific sample. Beamlines comprise optical elements and sample environments that employ sub-micron, multi-axis, precision motion systems operating in Ultra High Vacuum environments and often at cryogenic temperatures.

Mechanical Designer:

The aim of this role is to provide professional mechanical engineering assistance in carrying out projects related to the technical systems of the Diamond facility.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assist in the production of specifications, design models, schedules, reports and other documentation for Diamond projects on the beamlines and accelerators;
  • Develop expertise in and carry out Finite Element Analysis to calculate static and dynamic stress, strain and thermal response of various systems;
  • Produce mechanical  design models and some detail drawings for technical systems such as; Precision Motion mechanisms for optical systems, Vacuum vessels, Fabrications for supporting mechanical systems, Beamline and system layouts;
  • Develop and apply knowledge and understanding in technologies such as :Ultra High Vacuum systems, Precision motion systems, Radiation protection and Personnel safety systems;
  • Use of Computer Aided Design software packages Pro-E/PDM-Link in 3D and AutoCAD in 2D and ANSYS for FEA;
  • Assist in procurement of equipment through commercial suppliers;
  • Contribute to hazard analysis and risk assessment exercises;
  • Maintain and update engineering models and drawings and other documentation on projects;
  • Work within DLS procedures and contribute to their development.

 

Mechanical Design Engineer:

The aim of this role is to provide mechanical engineering design support to the technical systems of the Diamond facility.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Work closely with internal and external scientific and engineering staff to produce mechanical designs for projects;
  • Develop and apply expertise in technologies including ultra high vacuum systems, stable support structures, precision mechanisms, cryogenics and the general design of scientific equipment and plant;
  • Produce concept designs, layouts, assembly drawings and detailed manufacturing drawings employing AutoCAD and Pro-Engineer software;
  • Carry out calculations and FEA as competence and supervision allow;
  • Procurement of equipment through commercial suppliers;
  • Supervision of internal and contract design staff and control of quality;
  • Contribute to hazard analysis and risk assessment exercises;
  • Maintain and update engineering drawings and documentation on projects;
  • Work within DLS procedures and contribute to their development.

Qualification & Experience - Essential

Mechanical Designer:

  • IMechE accredited First or Upper Second Class BEng (Hons) degree plus appropriate Masters degree or approved Further Learning to Masters level;
  • IMechE accredited First or Upper Second Class MEng degree;
  • Some relevant post graduate experience;
  • Able to read engineering drawings;
  • An interest in the challenges of sub-micron positioning and stability.

 

Mechanical Design Engineer:

  • Degree or equivalent in relevant discipline;
  • Ability to provide ideas and creative solutions to design problems;
  • Excellent working knowledge of a 3D CAD system with significant hands on experience;
  • Demonstrate self-motivation;
  • Demonstrate ability and initiative to get to the heart of a problem and take it efficiently through to completion;
  • Demonstrate good oral and written communication skills with peers, subordinates, customers and suppliers;
  • Good background in mechanical engineering;
  • Excellent working knowledge of engineering drawings;
  • Ability to work in a team;
  • Design experience of materials selection, joining and manufacturing techniques.

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

Mechanical Designer:

  • Registration with IMechE;
  • Design of scientific equipment;
  • Experience of precision motion systems;
  • Experience of Ultra High Vacuum or Cryogenics;
  • Experience of planning projects;
  • Driving Licence.

 

Mechanical Design Engineer:

  • Engineering Council registration and membership of relevant professional body;
  • Demonstrate ability to lead, motivate and manage internal and contract staff;
  • Good working knowledge of CREO CAD system;
  • Good working knowledge of PDM-Link;
  • Good working knowledge of AutoCAD;
  • Some appreciation of an FEA package;
  • Competent in Microsoft office suite;
  • Experience of working within a QA system;
  • Good appreciation of project management;
  • Experience in ultra high vacuum technology;
  • Experience in micron precision mechanism design;
  • Experience with motion control systems;
  • Experience of overseeing manufacture, assembly, testing and commissioning of systems.
