Job Description

The UK’s national synchrotron science facility, Diamond Light Source, conducts world-class research in virtually all fields of science. Located 20 minutes from Oxford, it sits in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and offers rewarding career opportunities.

The aim of the ID group is to provide state-of-the-art Insertion Devices for Diamond. The role of Senior Mechanical Project Engineer is to contribute to this objective by taking responsibility for all mechanical aspects of new and existing Insertion Devices, by achieving the delivery targets of new IDs and by maintaining the installed insertion devices.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide the mechanical design and associated specifications for the insertion devices, supports, chicane magnets, trim magnets and magnetic measuring devices which may be required;
  • Provide creative, innovative and adaptive solutions to problems involved with the mechanical engineering and provide professional input to the mechanical design, manufacture, installation, testing and commissioning phases;
  • Produce design calculations to predict performance of designs prior to manufacture and where necessary perform or supervise FEA on critical areas;
  • Interact closely with scientific staff in support of Diamond accelerator, insertion device, front end and beamline projects;
  • Negotiate, agree and write technical specifications, produce and monitor project management plans including Gantt charts, resource and procurement plans;
  • Make presentations of project status and technical issues at project meetings;
  • Supervise internal and contract staff;
  • Maintain and manage project files containing all relevant project documentation;
  • Keep up to date with relevant technology and industry best practice;
  • Comply with the Diamond companywide and local Health and Safety procedures and policies and where appropriate develop local procedures;
  • Ensure that ID’s fully comply with Health and Safety law, particularly the European Machinery Directive, and maintain technical records for each ID accordingly;
  • Production engineer ID’s so that series production can be undertaken within the ID group and/or by external industrial partners efficiently and economically.

Qualification & Experience - Essential

  • Masters degree or equivalent in relevant mechanical engineering;
  • Ability to provide ideas, creativity and to bring rigorous analytical methods to bear on design problems;
  • Lead projects completing specifications and managing time, cost and quality;
  • Demonstrate self-motivation;
  • Demonstrate ability and initiative to get to the heart of a problem and take it through to completion;
  • Demonstrate good oral and written communication skills with management, peers, subordinates, customers and suppliers;
  • Demonstrate ability to lead, motivate and manage internal and contract staff;
  • A practical background in mechanical engineering with significant design and assembly experience;
  • Experience in the specification, procurement, installation and commissioning of engineering systems;
  • Experience of project management;
  • Experience of mechanical FEA;
  • Very good working knowledge of engineering drawings;
  • Experience of working in a team and presenting ideas and solutions to customers;
  • Competent in the use of computers and Word, Excel, Power Point, MSProject;
  • Experience in precision mechanism design;
  • Experience of mechanical fabrication and manufacturing techniques;
  • Competence in the selection of materials;
  • Experience of supervision; 
  • Experience of working within a QA system;
  • Experience in motion control systems;
  • Familiarity with the machinery directive;
  • Must be available to travel on work related business with some overnight stays occasionally.

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

  • PhD or equivalent in relevant discipline;
  • Experience with cryogenic cooling;
  • Experience of heat transfer calculations and design;
  • Competence in AutoCAD or Creo;
  • Production engineering experience;
  • Engineering Council registration and membership of relevant professional body;
  • Driving License.
