Job Description

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. Located on the Harwell Science & Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire a 20 minute drive south of Oxford in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Diamond Light Source conducts world-class research in virtually all fields of science and offers rewarding career opportunities covering both technical and scientific disciplines.

We are seeking a Scientist to join our Industrial Liaison Group to develop and deliver the service offered to industrial users of Diamond in the field of X-ray imaging.  You will be involved in the optimisation, operation and marketing of the industrial aspects of relevant beamlines, particularly I12 and I13. As part of a multi disciplinary team you will be based in the Industrial Liaison Group but will also work closely with the beamline teams.  Ideally you should have experience of working in a commercial environment.

  • Provide a full scientific consultancy service to industrial users of Diamond in the area of X ray imaging, designing, planning and ensuring successful implementation of experiments to address industrial research problems;
  • Liaise with the relevant Principal Beamline Scientists and other Diamond staff as appropriate in order to manage the delivery of the service;
  • For full service projects, where the industrial user does not participate in the experiment, take responsibility for sample management, data collection and reporting to the customer.
  • Implement specific aspects of the group’s business plan by :
    1. marketing Diamond to a specific industrial sector(s) as identified in the plan, including production of a range of promotional material;
    2. external and internal dissemination of industrial research projects at Diamond;
    3. participating in company visits etc.

Qualification & Experience - Essential

  • Appropriate first degree;
  • Relevant PhD degree or equivalent qualification or demonstrable experience;
  • Experience in X-ray imaging and/or tomography data collection and analysis;
  • Experience or knowledge of synchrotron radiation;
  • Experience with Windows/Linux/Unix;
  • Good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills;
  • Ability to interact with staff and facility users at all levels;
  • Ability to work flexibly with occasional weekend and out-of hours working;
  • Ability and initiative to get to the heart of the problem and take it effectively through to completion;
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team;
  • Self-motivation;
  • Must be able to travel occasionally within the UK and abroad, including overnight absences.

 

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

  • Experience with Avizo visualisation software;
  • Experience in using X-ray imaging synchrotron beamlines;
  • Experience of working in a commercial environment.
