Job Description

The UK’s national synchrotron science facility, Diamond Light Source, conducts world-class research in virtually all fields of science. Located 20 minutes from Oxford, it sits in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and offers rewarding career opportunities.

The aim of this role is to coordinate the supply, installation, commissioning and verification of Oxygen depletion systems for Diamond Beamlines.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage the production of control panels and their installation through to final verification of the finished system and handover duties;
  • Co-ordinate the many departments and teams within Diamond to facilitate the successful implementation of Oxygen depletion systems on Beamlines;
  • Manage the procurement of parts and equipment from external suppliers and internal workshops ensuring ‘on-time’ deliveries to specification and quality;
  • Co-ordinate the various phases of the project from production of prototype through to final verification of the finished system;
  • Check technical specifications, documentation and electrical drawings;
  • Supervise internal and contract staff as required to deliver the working system;
  • Inspect the installation of the Oxygen depletion systems;
  • Test and verify the Oxygen depletion systems against test / verification specifications;
  • Comply with procedures required for the life cycle of a safety system (to BS EN 61508) and ensure third parties are also aware and complying;
  • Compile, manage and maintain project files;
  • Contribute to the compilation of the project safety file;
  • Organise the handover of the installed equipment to final users;
  • Devise and run orientation workshops about the installed systems for beamline staff;

Qualification & Experience - Essential

  • HNC or equivalent in relevant discipline;
  • Ability to manage and run technical projects within a QA system;
  • Demonstrate self motivation;
  • Demonstrate ability to anticipate problems and the ability to get to the heat of any problems and take it efficiently through to completion;
  • Demonstrate good oral communication, the ability to discuss / negotiate issues with management, peers, subordinates, customers and suppliers;
  • Demonstrate good written communication skills, to produce progress reports, test documentation, manuals and other material;
  • Demonstrate ability to lead, motivate, manage internal and contract staff;
  • Ability to test electrical control systems;
  • Good post apprentice background in electrical engineering;
  • Good working knowledge and understanding of electrical drawings and working to specifications / standards;
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office;
  • Experience of planning and managing technical projects;
  • Experience of working in a team and with other teams;
  • Experience of supervising personnel and teams;
  • Experience of overseeing manufacture, assembly, testing and commissioning systems against a specification / standards;

Qualification & Experience - Desirable

  • Engineering Council registration and membership of relevant professional body;
  • Ability to manage and run a safety system project to BS EN 61508;
  • Ability to initiate and plan a safety system project and implement a system to BS EN 61508;
  • Knowledge of gas monitoring control systems;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Project;
  • Experience of working within a QA system;
  • Working knowledge of relevant British / European / International standards; BS EN 60204-1: Safety of machinery – electrical equipment of machines; BS EN 61508: Functional safety of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic safety-related systems (Training will be given); BS 7671: Requirements for electrical installations (IEE wiring regulations 17th edition);
