Current Research Inerests

I a currently involved in research on various topics such as:

  • study of the active sites and of the chemical reactions in catalysis by combining XAS with Ir or UV-Vis or Raman spectroscopies or by in situ and operando XAS experiments (e.g. Chromocene-based and Phillips-type catalysts for ethylene polymerization and supported copper chloride for oxychlorination reaction)
  • study of the stability with respect to temperature and of interaction with gases of micro/nanoporous materials by means of operando XAS and quick-EXAFS techniques (e.g. metal organic frameworks and zeolites mainly for gas storage and separation but also for other potential future applications)
  • study of the electronic structure and excitations of transition metal complexes by means of Resonant XAS/XES and time-resolved XAS (e.g. photoactivatable Ru-polypyridyl complexes promising as anticancer agents for photodynamic therapy or as cage compounds for bioactive ligand release)

Diego is Beamline Scientist on the Core EXAFS beamline B18. Since he joined Diamond Light Source in January 2012, he has also been working for a period in the Industrial Liaison Group as responsible for industrial spectroscopy experiments.

Diego studied in his home town of Torino in Italy, acquiring a degree in physics and a PhD in material science. He has spent most of his research career to date focusing on the application of advanced X-ray techniques to the characterisation of materials (including catalysts, micro/nanoporous materials, and transition metal complexes). His particular specialism lies in X-ray Absorption and Emission techniques with an interest in time- resolved experiments. He also developed a good experience in the EXAFS and XANES data analysis and simulations.
