Martin Walsh is Deputy to Diamond's Life Science Director Prof. David Stuart. As coordinator of Diamond's life science activities he oversees research which spans macromolecular crystallography, small-angle X-ray scattering, circular dichroism, infrared microspectroscopy and soft X-ray imaging for biology. As well as exploiting opportunities on other Diamond beamlines, notable spectroscopy and hard x-ray imaging, life science activities are supported by work at the Research Complex at Harwell for which Diamond is a stakeholder. Finally, these research activities are now complemented by electron microscopy through the establishment of a national cryo-electron microscopy facility at Diamond which has recently been approved for funding.
As a protein crystallographer his research is primarily aimed at exploiting the use of X-ray crystallography to understand the structure and function of bacterial proteins.
Diamond Light Source is the UK's national synchrotron science facility, located at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire.
