WARNING: USE THE TUNNEL SCRIPT ONLY IF INSTRUCTED BY BEAMLINE STAFF!
Download our script and make it executable: chmod +x dls-tunnel.sh
Run the script: dls-tunnel.sh -u yourFedId ixx (e.g. i02)
Start GDA: open the folder beamline_launchers and double click on the icon
Start Albula: open the folder DLS_launchers and double click on the icon
Note for Mac users: keyboard shortcut for '#' symbol is 'alt (to the right of the space bar)' + '3'
The dls-tunnel.sh script is only to be used to access Diamond MX beamlines during your scheduled beamtime for data collections or a pre-agreed test time with the beamline responsible. If you wish to use Diamond facilities for processing data after scheduled beamtime please follow the instructions here to log on to nx.diamond.ac.uk.

First, download the latest version of the dls-tunnel.sh script here.
Open a terminal window and make the script executable:
chmod +x dls-tunnel.sh
Run the script by typing the following command in your terminal:
dls-tunnel.sh -u yourFedId beamline (i02, i03, i04, i04-1 or i24)
e.g. dls-tunnel.sh -u abc12345 i04
NB. Try ./dls-tunnel.sh if dls-tunnel.sh doesn't work
We use LAN as the default network setting for NX to use (we assume you have a fast connection) and this provides the best graphics capability. If you have a slow network connection you could try one of the following options to see if responsivity improves:
dls-tunnel.sh -l adsl -u abc12345 i04
dls-tunnel.sh -l lan -u abc12345 i04
or if things are really bad try
dls-tunnel.sh -l modem -u abc12345 i04
When prompted, enter your password related to your FedId:
An NX Client window will pop-up click yes.
Enter your password and click OK to login:
Change to full screen mode by clicking on the icones below, then clik OK:
Two more screens will be displayed to show different options (check don't show this message again for the next time) click OK.
You are now connected to the beamline working station, to change the display option go to the top right corner:
Open the beamline launchers and make sure you double click on 'Start New GDA Client':
After starting GDA check in "Messages" / "Beamline notes" for any information relevant to the beamline that day:
Check the status on the top left corner of GDA to determine if you control the beamline. If the Baton is red, you will need to request it to the current holder. Right click on the Baton circle to open the Baton menu (for more options see Baton panel web page):
You can request the Baton by clicking 'Request Baton'. This will send a request to the holder. You can also send message to the baton holder via the Baton panel (see Baton panel web page).
Once the holder has agreed to release the Baton, your status will turn to green. You can now control the beamline and sample changer as if you were on the beamline. For instructions on how to use GDA, please refer to the relevant section of our manual.
To view your diffraction images, open the DLS_launchers and double click on the Albula icon.
At the end of your experiment, quit GDA and close NX player in "System" then "Log Out".
Using Two Monnitors (Recommended)
If you are using two monitors open a terminal window and type:
xrandr followed by enter
It will give you a list of available resolutions. For example for 2 monitors with a resolution of 1920x1200 one possible resolution is 3840x1200
Type in a terminal the following command with the resolution desired:
xrandr -s 3840x1200
Then in nomachine options (top right corner) choose "Display" and "Fullscreen on all screens"
If you wish to test the procedures for remote access from your lab to a beamline at Diamond prior to your first remote access experiment please contact your local contact who will arrange for a test visit during a shutdown or a machine day (typically Tuesday). This will allow you to familiarise yourself with the software and check all networks etc. work well.
If you need to configure your firewall to allow access to Diamond you may require the following information about our SSH tunnel. The machine used for the tunnel is nx.diamond.ac.uk, also known as nx-user.diamond.ac.uk and the IP address is 188.8.131.52.
